The Sixth Taiwan-U.S. Economic Prosperity Partnership Dialogue took place Jan. 27 in Washington D.C., with the two sides discussing ways to promote bilateral cooperation across a wide range of sectors.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the meeting was convened by Minister of Economic Affairs, Kung Ming-hsin and U.S. Under Secretary of State for Economic Affairs Jacob Helberg. The Taiwan delegation included Deputy Foreign Minister Chen Ming-chi, Deputy Digital Minister Isabel Hou and Deputy Education Minister Liu Kuo-wei.

The one-day meeting covered exchanges on cooperation in artificial intelligence supply chains, critical minerals, digital infrastructure, high-tech personnel cultivation and unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) component certification, as well as mutual collaboration in third countries such as the Philippines and Latin American countries.

The two sides also addressed tax-related barriers to increased investment, and agreed to set up task forces to expand supply chain cooperation and enhance key infrastructure, so as to ensure a more secure, more prosperous and innovation-driven partnership, the ministry added.

In particular, the MOFA said the U.S. supports exploration of new communication technologies to enhance communication resilience. Such support includes cooperating with U.S. of low-orbit satellite suppliers and working with the U.S. and partner countries to develop submarine cables and ICT infrastructure.

During the meeting, the American Institute in Taiwan and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the U.S. signed a Joint Statement on the Pax Silica Declaration and U.S.-Taiwan Cooperation on Economic Security to underscore Taiwan’s importance in the global AI supply chain.

Prior to the dialogue, Hsinchu County-based Industrial Technology Research Institute and the Association for Uncrewed Vehicle Systems International also concluded an agreement to include ITRI in the AUVSI’s Green UAS program as a recognized assessor, the MOFA said, adding that this will help upgrade the local supply chain and promote sector development.
